Rules of the Marsh
While Stanpit Marsh is open to the public all year round, visitors are asked to observe a number of rules to protect both the rare salt marsh environment and the various animals which visit or live on the marsh.
Dogs must be kept on leads
Dogs should remain on a lead at all times. The lead should be less than 3 metres in length. There is a Dog Control Order in place at Stanpit Marsh in order to protect the local wildlife, and dog walkers not keeping their dog on a lead risk a £75 fine.
Protected bird nesting areas
The Marsh is an important site for nesting, feeding and migrant birds. To prevent disturbance of these birds, there are clear markers identifying points beyond which visitors should not walk. Please abide by these at all times.
Horses
The livestock on site are New Forest Ponies and although they are used to people, they are still semi-wild. Visitors must not attempt to pet the animals, for their own safety. Feeding is not permitted, their numbers are managed to ensure appropriate grazing, and human food can kill horses and create behavioural issues.
Watercraft
Watercraft, especially kayaks and paddleboards, are not permitted to land or launch on/from any part of Stanpit Marsh. Watercraft are also requested to stay out of areas of the harbour clearly marked by yellow buoys, in order to minimise disturbance to valuable bird nesting and foraging habitat.
Angling/Fishing
Fishing is by licence only and there are restrictions on where anglers are allowed to fish. Bait digging and wading into the water within the yellow buoyed area is not permitted
Cycling
Cyclists must give way to other site users and keep to paths. Cycling is not permitted through North Scrubs.
Driving/Vehicle Use
Use of any mechanical vehicles, excluding mobility scooters, is not permitted on Stanpit Marsh.
Foraging
Foraging of any kind is not permitted on the Marsh, and even licensed foragers are not permitted.
Fires
Visitors to the Marsh must not light any fire or item that can make fire, or drop any lighted match or something likely to cause a fire.
Tents/Camping
Tents or other camping shelters may not be erected on Stanpit Marsh.
Model Aircraft and Drones
Powered model aircraft, including drones, may not be flown at Stanpit Marsh.
