Warden’s Update Autumn 2025

The BCP Countryside team given us another extensive update on news from the Marsh:

  • Pony grazing has been smooth and non-eventful so far. Cattle grazing (upped to 8 animals and a longer season) on Priory Marsh has worked well but the area continues to become more reedy, especially given the weather this summer, and we will look to increase numbers again in 2026. Cattle are to be removed mid-October. The pony round-up will be in November as usual.
  • Decking – we continue to patch as needed. Following obtaining 3 quotes, we have selected a preferred contractor and are hoping to appoint asap and move towards replacement work. Total cost is £15,860. (This is a work item where FOSM will contribute)
  • Moth survey – this is up to date, with the next session in late September, following one last Friday. We have been able to get extra people (and traps) out to supplement Phil’s work. It has been a very good year for moths.
  • The Myths, Moths and Moonlight event at the Visitor Centre was a success.
  • Some minor angling issues, including wading in prohibited areas and overnight anglers having a fire on Grimmery bank, which led to the log seat catching fire. The water bailiffs have been proactive when requested.
  • The algal mat in the harbour seems to be covering a lot of the exposed mud, due to a warm summer. This will be detrimental to the feeding birds who can’t penetrate it.
  • The height barrier into the car park had to be replaced after an incident.
  • Insect survey – this is up to date, with all sessions up to last month completed. The final session is in October.
  • New/replacement signage – there is a BCP meeting to discuss final budget spend on Thursday. The three replacement signs are on this list, so we just need to ensure adequate funds to cover (another item with FOSM funding input)
  • Visitor Centre spending. Zena is happy with the idea of a stipend from FOSM to cover minor expenses, especially on children’s events. The annual children’s colouring competition is about to finish, with lots of entries to date.
  • Ashtree Meadows and Monskwell Green – grazing has continued as usual, though the drought had caused problems. We will be removing some of the old fence line tomorrow as it has been replaced. Slightly more room will be available as a result.
  • The Bailey Bridge project enquiry form was submitted in early July – no response to date. The current structure needs some minor repairs for now. (FOSM funding to be available once details are finalised)
  • Riversmeet – the dog pond and repaired sculpture are now installed and a sculpture trail has been produced, with maps for children to follow the route.
